Job Description
UBONGO is Africa’s leading producer of kids’ edutainment. As a non-profit social enterprise, we create fun, localised, and multi-platform educational content that helps kids learn, and leverage their learning to change their lives. Ubongo reaches over 27 million kids across Africa through accessible technologies like TV, radio, and mobile phones. Our shows Ubongo Kids and Akili and Me currently air in 23 countries across Africa in multiple languages.
- POSITION OBJECTIVE (overall purpose of position)
The curriculum development officer is responsible for curriculum designing of all Ubongo products and making sure they align with the general Ubongo’s mission and vision at the best standard for our African audience.
Key Responsibilities

Main Activities
Responsibility 1
Curriculum research and design for our products
- Designing inclusive curriculum for Ubongo products: This includes designing research tools, going to the field and ensuring we have enough feedback that contributes towards curriculum development
- Research and keep a record of the different African countries’ curricula for our audience-targeted group
- Research, document and apply emerging trends in teaching our core subjects Social Emotional Learning (SEL), STEM, Literacy, through media
- Continuous capacity building and technical assistance of all Ubongo departments to ensure they understand the curriculum and trends and apply them in what they do.
- Be a point person for the general Ubongo Curriculum, ensuring it’s up to date and enrolled through all other Ubongo’s departments.
Responsibility 2
Technical assistance in Production
- Provide technical assistance while producing content at all stages of production which includes outline, script, storyboard, animatic, and animation
- Capacity building with the production team on best practices of scripting, storyboarding, animating the specific learning objectives
- Research innovative ways to use edutainment to deliver the learning objectives
Responsibility 3
Educational Materials Development
- Support materials/resources development for caregivers and teachers to be shared in our different platforms.

- QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED (Minimum knowledge, skills, and behaviors to perform the job)
Physical
Educational
- Bachelor degree in Education or Curriculum Development or related field
Experience
- 5 years experience with a minimum of 3 years of teaching primary school and 2 years of curriculum development. Preferred subjects: STEM, Literacy and SEL. Experience in teaching and or curriculum development for SEL is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of different curricula in use among African countries (more than one curriculum)
- Experience in developing curriculum for teaching primary school children through media such as TV, Radio, App, online etc, or other playful approaches is a bonus.
- Fluent in English and any other African language used in our key markets

- Strong research and analytical skills
- Strong communication and outreach skills
- Have a can-do attitude and readiness to learn on the job
- Self-motivated and possess a high level of responsibility to complete tasks on time
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Understanding of different educational technologies and or software for curriculum development.
- Ability to work remotely – experience using Asana, Slack, and Google Drive is preferred
