ELEPHANT CONSERVATION ORGANIZATION IS SEEKING A PROJECT MANAGER

POSITION TITLE: Project Manager (PM)

REPORTS TO: Director

JOB CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time

 

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW:

Established in 2020, Elephant Conservation Organization (ECO) aims to work with government entities and communities to improve elephant security in Tanzania. ECO’s focus will begin by addressing an immediate need with a model that has been widely successful in protecting elephants in neighboring Kenya, a mobile wildlife vet unit. Partnering with government entities Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), and Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI), ECO will increase the capacity to protect wildlife in Tanzania.

 

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Reporting to ECO Director Marc Goss, the Project Manager will be responsible for strengthening the internal organization processes and infrastructure that will allow ECO to continue to grow and fulfill its mission. The main role will be keeping the flow of business moving in a productive direction and ensure all operations for ECO are seamlessly communicated and goals achieved in a timely manner. We’re looking for a candidate with 5+ years of experience as a manager within an organization similar in size to work with ECO in Tanzania. They will be able to conduct themselves professionally in this public facing role and engage with stakeholders in all departments. This role requires a high level of communication skills, and the ideal candidate will be comfortable representing ECO. We are looking for a highly organized and task-oriented individual who can lead in a direct and respectful

way. An ideal candidate will be able to problem solve and adapt to a constantly changing environment.

 

OBJECTIVES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS ROLE

A major role will be the day-to-day oversight of ECO based in Arusha but operating remotely in Tanzania. You will be tasked with working alongside ECO’s Directors, Board of Trustees, accountant, operational partners, and consultants to effectively manage the operations of ECO. Daily communication will be required for this position.

 

Overall Responsibilities

• Engage with the ECO supported vets in the field on a regular basis to mentor them and provide support as identified by their needs and requirements to be effective in treating injured wildlife;

• Oversee all operations at the Director’s instruction;

• Disseminate and manage information coming from ECO technical advisors on veterinary best practices;

• Manage infrastructural development projects, conduct site assessments, manage budgets and ensure timelines are met;

• Make quick and effective decisions in the field when the Director is not available;

• At the Director’s direction, arrange, attend and minute meetings as the primary agent of ECO, and communicate action items;

• Keep an up-to-date list of all action items needing the Director’s attention that is communicated regularly;

• Regularly communicate decisions from the Director to employees, partners and vendors

• Regularly update Director on a status of ongoing projects;

• Maintain a high level of organization to keep momentum within ECO operations;

• Create, manage and communicate policy changes to ECO staff;

• Liaison with other members of the senior management team to complete tasks;

• Manage all staff members at ECO to ensure they maintain forward momentum and quality of delivery across departments.

• Ensure implementation of all processes, policies, and standard operating procedures;

• Identify disciplinary issues and activate corrective procedures when needed;

• Conduct spot-checks on mobile operations to check the above;

• Ensure vehicle fleet and equipment is being maintained as per manufacturers guidelines;

• Oversee day-to-day activities of the administration department, drivers, camp staff and vets;

• Write a monthly internal report to the Director and outward facing report for donors, government and partners.

• Review procurement reports and oversee procurement process to ensure timely delivery, quality of products and forward planning;

• Host donors, government officials and VIPs at the direction of the Director.

 

Skills and Qualifications

• A minimum of five years’ management experience

• A citizen of Tanzania or a work permit to work in Tanzania

• Demonstrated exceptional communication and relationship-building skills

• Ability to manage upwards

• Strong spoken and written English and Kiswahili

• Strong attention to detail

• A passion for conservation and living in the field

• Adept at managing tasks and balancing priorities

• HR management experience

• Experience with managing teams across multiple locations

• Experience with managing teams of various educational levels

• Competence in Microsoft Office suite

• Confidence with public speaking

• Legal or accounting experience a plus

• Paramilitary training a plus

• Pilot’s license a plus
