Job Description

Chemonics seeks an Entomologist for the anticipated USAID-funded Malaria Vector Control Activity (MVCA). This activity seeks to identify and implement proven, evidence-based vector control approaches in Tanzania, in support of reducing the overall malaria burden and moving Tanzania closer to malaria elimination.

The Entomologist shall be a public health expert with extensive experience in malaria vector control activities and the field of entomology. He/She will report to the Deputy Chief of Party (DCOP), Technical. The position is expected to be based full-time in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for the duration of the activity, and is contingent upon activity award. Responsibilities:

  • Lead planning and implementation of entomological activities in collaboration with the NMCP and other development and implementing partners in selected districts.
  • Provide technical support to the NMCP in planning, implementation and monitoring of entomological surveillance activities.
  • Monitor vector density and behavior using World Health Organization (WHO) standard methods and use the data to inform vector control planning.
  • Lead monitoring of vector susceptibility to insecticides used for vector control (for insecticide treated nets and for indoor residual spraying).
  • Ensure availability of both susceptible and resistant mosquito colonies to support quality assurance and susceptibility testing in the country.
  • Plan and lead capacity-strengthening of district council level entomologists including provision of supportive supervision.
  • Prepare entomological monitoring reports and lead sharing of lessons learned.
  • Conduct thought leadership including abstracts for conference presentation, technical briefs, blogs and peer reviewed manuscripts.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support product development, conservation efforts, and pest management strategies.
  • Stay current with the latest research and developments in entomology.
  • Maintain working relationships with USAID/Tanzania, the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP), the Ministry of Public Health, implementing partners, and key stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or Master’s degree in Medical Entomology, Vector Biology, Environmental Health or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in entomology, malaria prevention or related field.
  • Experience designing and conducting experiments.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical software.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
  • Attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working in Tanzania and deep knowledge of geo-political, ethnic, cultural, and other considerations affecting programming in Tanzania and the region is required.
  • Strong ability to maintain partnership with the Government of Tanzania to strengthen the capacity of host-country institutions and local organizations to identify and implement proven, evidence-based vector control approaches in Tanzania, in support of reducing the overall malaria burden, and moving Tanzania closer to malaria elimination.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain a strong, diverse, inclusive, cohesive team where all team members are empowered and supported, including stakeholders and partners.

  • Strong interpersonal, representation and oral and written communication skills.

  • Fluency in English required, Swahili desirable.
